Rim Former Instructions

Before you begin

Check contents

Verify the Rim Former, handle, and surface are intact and free of damage.

Safety first

Use heat-resistant gloves and eye protection. Keep a clear, ventilated workspace away from flammables.

Heat source

Use a controlled heat source (e.g., hot plate). Warm gradually for even heat transfer.

Prep materials

Have wax rims, tools, and a cool, clean surface ready for shaping and inspection.

The instrument body is metal for uniform heat distribution. Typical sterilization: up to 250°F (121°C). Always follow your clinic's protocols.

Step-by-step operation

Step 1 — Warm the tool

Pre-heat gently until the working surface is uniformly warm (not glowing).

Step 2 — Contact the wax rim

Touch the rim lightly to the heated edge to begin softening; avoid over-melting.

Step 3 — Form & level

Guide the rim to achieve parallel, even surfaces. Use short passes for control.

Step 4 — Check fit

Allow to cool briefly, then verify dimensions and symmetry. Repeat light passes if needed.

Step 5 — Cool & finish

Let the rim settle; refine edges with minimal reheating to preserve definition.

Step 6 — Power down

Remove heat and place the tool on a heat-safe surface to cool before handling.

Safety & handling

  • Use in a ventilated area; avoid direct flame on plastic components.
  • Do not overheat; excessive heat can char wax and shorten tool life.
  • Keep away from moisture when hot; avoid thermal shock.
  • Never leave a heated tool unattended.

Cleaning & maintenance

  • Allow to cool to room temperature before cleaning.
  • Wipe residue with a soft cloth; avoid abrasive pads that may scratch the surface.
  • Disinfection/sterilization per clinic protocol; instrument is autoclavable up to 250°F (121°C).
  • Store dry, in protective packaging; avoid drops or hard impacts.

Troubleshooting

  • Uneven melting: Pre-heat longer and use shorter, even passes.
  • Wax charring: Tool too hot — reduce heat and work in brief contact.
  • Rim not parallel: Re-level with light touches; check bench level and hand position.
  • Residue sticking: Cool slightly between passes; wipe the surface clean when safe.
